The goal of the Arts and Letters Committee is to promote individual and community awareness of the various fields of artistic endeavors; to encourage the development of individual and collective skills in the liberal arts; to showcase those who possess talents which contribute to an increased sensitivity to and an appreciation of the beauty around us; and to support those organizations who foster artistic and related disciplines.
The Arts & Letters Committee organizes activities such as:
Emerging Artist Showcase
Delta Red Carpet Events (Movie Screenings)
Painting with a Twist
Social Action and the Five Point Programs share a common goal: to provide social action projects to serve, educate, and support the sorority’s community. Social Action will partner with our sister chapters, Berkeley Bay Area Alumnae Chapter and Hayward Tri-City Alumnae Chapter, to provide a wider outreach to the communities in their service areas. The chapter anxiously looks forward to creating, producing, and successfully working in the community.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has been involved in “social action” almost since its inception. In March of 1913, several of the Founders marched in the historic Suffragist March under the Delta Sigma Theta banner, which constitutes as the first public act of the Sorority.
Current and Past Chapter Activities
IMPACT – Inspiring and Motivating Public Advocates for Community Transformations, which culminates into a full day of Public Service in the Oakland East Bay Community during the month of March.
BART – (Becoming a Responsible Teen) is a regional health project focusing on educating young African American women about preventing HIV/AIDS.
EMBODI – (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) program is designed to refocus the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., with the support and action of other major organizations, on the plight of African-American males. Both informal and empirical data suggests that the vast majority of African-American males continues to be in crisis and is not reaching its fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally. EMBODI is designed to address these issues through dialogue, and recommendations for change and action.
Delta GEMS – created to catch the dreams of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a CAN DO attitude.
